Open College Network London (OCNLR)
Award in Understanding Mediation

Aims of the course

This intense training in 'Understanding Mediation' is designed to provide you with the understanding of the mediation process, the role of a mediator, the skills required and the purpose of mediation in the facilitation of conflict resolution. It will help you gain the capability to understand and implement a mediation process in any context.

The learning integrates theoretical, practical and self-reflective aspects. You will learn about conflict and mediation within different contexts, generally involving families, the practical skills and mindsets needed to be a mediator, the process of mediation and methods to continue your professional development. You will be able to demonstrate and evaluate your own practical mediation abilities. You will also learn particular communication skills vital in the work of a mediator, and how to work with a co-mediator, as well as learning to manage your own prejudices within the mediation process and reflect upon your ability to use key mediation skills.

Programme overview

This course is currently delivered online over 8 days in half-day sessions. This Award is a recognised qualification in the national framework, fully accredited by the Open College Network (OCNLR www.ocnlondon.org.uk/) at Level 3 (equivalent to an Advanced Diploma) offering two units with a total of 6 credits, 'Understanding Mediation' (Ofqual J_503_9823) and 'Key Mediation Skills' (Ofqual F_503_9822).
